E-Commerce/XCart Customization

Selecting, setting up and customizing a successful ecommerce solution is a process that evolves way beyond coding - into integrating with the 3rd parties, coordinating content and dealing with other factors that typically delay (if not stop) the process.
But we've been through this process many times.

Find out how..

Does your website truly represent your organization? (Or if you are a growing business - does your website represent where you plan on being in the near future?)
Do your employees recommend that your potential customers check out your website for more information? (Or are they embarrassed to even mention your website to prospects?)

If you face challenges with the above, it is time for some spring cleaning, and you are certainly not alone! Many businesses invest thousands of dollars in marketing campaigns, advertising and sales training, yet settle for a mediocre and ineffective web presence.

Common reasons and excuses for that boil down to the fact that the company relies on other means to generate leads (not the website).

Yet we all know very well that when it comes to projecting the right image and first impression - every small detail matters. Our brains are wired to assume that a "part" represents the "whole" (it's a sanity mechanism really, since with the information overload we all experience nowadays it is simply not feasible to take the time to properly learn about the "whole").

The image your website projects is what your visitors assume about your company.

So let's look at the bigger picture - by projecting the wrong image, not only are you losing potential customers, but you are missing out on job candidates, referral sources, partner and vendor relationships, and publicity.

So what makes an effective website that helps you grow your business?

The right first impression

If your visitors find your site in the list of search results on Google or another search engine or directory, within a split second upon arriving on your website they will be making their first "Back Button" decision - to click or not to click - based solely on the look of your website.

The first impression your website projects needs to match the expectations of your visitor. While a high-end website is a good fit for Tiffany, BMW or a fashion designer, it won't work for a company selling a mainstream product, as an expensive-looking website may scare away a visitor who doesn't intend to spend a lot of money.

A "Web 2.0" web design style (catchy bright buttons, big fonts, etc.) may be a must for a company offering software solutions, it won't make much sense for a conservative legal firm or for a financial advisor.

The first impression is a thin line to walk on, but it has to be just right. If the first impression projected by your website does not meet your visitors' expectations, you may lose your visitors before they even get a chance to read the text.

Effective message presentation - learn from the road signs!

Many websites rely on text and navigation menus to present their offerings. To learn about what it is that they do, visitors need to find their way around the website first and then read paragraphs of text. Assuming they can locate the right paragraphs and glance through them, how much of that information will be retained?

There is a good reason road sign messages are super condensed and get right to the point: drivers are not going to take the time to read and retain paragraphs of text. Less equals more: your visitors are rushing through Google searches and information at a similarly high speed, and it only makes sense to apply the same messaging tactics to a website.

There are many ways to capture initial attention on a website: catchy icons or visuals, animated or interactive promotionals, attractive branding and strong text formatting to accentuate certain sentences.

Once you've conquered your visitor's attention, it is time to generate enough interest for your visitor to either buy, or consider doing business with you - obviously, depending on your products or services the transaction may need to happen offline.

The Three Pillars of Conversion

There are three things that your visitor needs to see on your site before he or she is interested in buying your product (or contact you with the intention of doing business with you).

Solutions

Your visitor needs to clearly see not only the benefits of your products and services in general, but the benefits in relation to that visitor. If she is looking for quality first, a "low cost" benefit is not going to matter much. "Lifetime warranty" or "24/7 live phone support" on the other hand, may get her interested. What solutions and benefits to showcase - comes from knowing your best customers and the issues you are solving for them.

Credibility

Once the visitor starts identifying with what you are saying, the next question would be - can you deliver as you promise? There are several ways to showcase credibility, both via your site content (client testimonials, case studies, product reviews, before-and-after pictures, accreditations, certifications, affiliations, years of experience, etc.), and visually (the right "look and feel" for your line of business - as mentioned above).

Authority

Present your organization as an expert in your industry and show that you are about the big picture, and not just your bottom line:

Post some free educational resources and articles to get your visitors engaged with your site and learn a few things from you.

Share your experiences in your blog. A blog does not need to require any serious writing - you can simply expand on a product question your customer emailed you about, comment on a useful article or idea published by another blogger, mention a recent tradeshow (or an upcoming event), share a tip or a common pitfall to look out for. Since you know more about your industry than most of your potential customers, they would appreciate your participation and sharing.

Encourage your visitors to be proactive. As an example, here is a great call to action on American Security Devices website:

"Most people install an alarm system after their home or business has been broken into... why wait?"

Projecting authority not only shows that you understand the big picture and care about the community, but also helps you educate your customers and manage their expectations.

The above are just general guidelines to help any business website project the right image, improve sales and ultimately - grow the business.
